Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a scientifically supported treatment that has been is use for over 50 years. It has gained more attention and popularity as more individuals seek alternatives to medication.

Neurofeedback research shows symptom reduction in ADHD, anxiety, Autism, depression, PTSD, seizures, and other disorders.

Neurofeedback training uses operant conditioning and shaping to change current inefficient brainwave patterns into more efficient patterns through "rewards" as the brain's activity changes into the desired pattern.

How does is work?

An electroencephalogram or EEG is taken using a 10-electrode cap placed over the head. The electrodes read the brain's electrical activity, while complex software records and analyzes the brainwaves creating a "brain map." The brain map is a visual representation of how the brain is functioning.

The client's symptoms are compared to the brain map and a protocol is created to address the symptoms.

During training, when the brain's activity moves into the new patterns matching the protocol, the brain is rewarded with a visual and audio reward. This reward reinforces the brain to repeat the desired pattern, teaching the brain to continue functioning with the new, more efficient pattern.

How long does it take?

Typically, 10-20 sessions are needed for enduring change of the primary symptom. If several symptoms are being addressed, 20-30 sessions are likely needed.

A minimum of one training session per week is required to maintain learning. Two sessions per week is recommended for faster learning and symptom improvement.

Training sessions are 45 minutes long.

Will it work for me?

Neurofeedback training can be utilized by individuals 6 years and older.

Since each brain is unique, each individual's progress will vary. Lack of progress/change can be due to physiological concerns such as brain damage, sleep deprivation, or medical conditions. Medications, alcohol, marijuana, or other substance use can impede progress.

Other factors that can negatively impact progress are a chaotic/dysfunctional household, work, school, and/or social stressors.

Are there risks?

Neurofeedback is non-invasive and painless. The FDA recognizes Neurofeedback as an intervention that does not cause harm. Side effects are rare, minor, and rarely last more than 24 hours. These effects may be feeling tired, headache, or moodiness.

Prescribed medications may need to be reduced or changed as Neurofeedback training increases brain brainfunctioning, so please consult with your doctor.

What is the cost?

The initial QEEG, brain map, and consultation is $300.

Training sessions are $100 each.

A minimum of 10 training sessions are required for enduring change.

The total cost for the QEEG, brain map, 10 training sessions, and final brain map is $1300.
